Pre-K Classes

The School For Young Children  »  Pre-K Classes

SYC Pre-K class is Monday through Friday. Five days works well as a preparation for kindergarten. The five-half day Pre-K program allows adequate time to prepare children with the skills needed in kindergarten plus an excellent transition for the physical demands of the five full days of kindergarten. In order for a child to be enrolled in our Pre-K classes, they must have turned 4 on or before August 31st of the enrolling year.  Our Pre-K class is structured to prepare students for the kindergarten classroom. Each day consists of free play, group activities, circle time, snack, outside play (weather permitting) and school related activities.  Students will explore their world and investigate how things work with the STEM exploration activities in their classroom. Students learn about letters each week as we focus on a new letter each week. Students also work on weekly Bible verses and activities related to the theme of the week.  In circle time, students achieve memorizing their address, phone number and the ability to recognize and spell their own name, just to name a few.  Pastor Rob holds exciting chapel services with the students twice monthly. Pre-K is an exciting age group to be a part of here at SYC and our students graduate with full assurance of achieving greatness in the years to come!

Meet Our Teachers

Kristy Mitchell is the Lead teacher in the Pre-K Class.  She has been at SYC for over  28 years. She is happily married to her sweetheart for over 40 years, and they have four children. Mrs. Mitchell and her family attend Calvary Advent Christian Church where they see the Lord working each and every week.  Mrs. Mitchell has her Early Childhood Credentials I and II and is CPR/First Aid Licensed.  She enjoys working at SYC because she feels like she is a part of a loving family here, and she loves sharing Jesus with the students.  Many kindergarten teachers are thankful for Mrs. Mitchell and her record for students who are well prepared for kindergarten.

Cheryl Brown is the Assistant Pre-K teacher and has been at SYC for 17 years.  She is a mother to her outstanding children and now a grandmother. Ms. Brown enjoys attending church where she grew up, at the Bushtown Mennonite Brethren.  Ms. Brown is very family oriented and loves spending time with her big family and close friends.  Ms. Brown holds her Early Childhood Credentials, is licensed in CPR and First Aid and considers her position here at SYC to be a “blessing” because she can love and nurture the children each day.
